Opening: 25 February, 7:00 p.m.

Zderzak Gallery, ul. Floriańska 3, 3rd floor, Krakow

This latest exhibition by Łukasz Stokłosa tackles a subject that was previously hidden under the surface of the tales in his previous, splendidly received Zderzak exhibitions: A Winter`s Tale (2011), Picture Storehouse (2013, Radio Krakow Distinction), and Number 392 (2015, Radio Krakow Distinction).

Misfits are people at odds with life, unreconciled to the moral norms imposed by society. They possess greater imaginations than most, they seek love and powerful experiences, they escape into art. Misfits are cursed artists, cast onto the margins, alone.

Stokłosa`s tale develops, as always, along several lines. Eroticism, surges of emotion, and relationships between people are expressed through acting, literature, dance, and music. A parable for the artist`s life is created in the interiors of the Venice`s La Fenice opera hall, which is painted twice. One time this is an empty stage with a theater curtain, the next an unsettling view of the Emperor`s box seat.

The borders of the lives of the "misfits" are drawn by art. Their life is art, and this can be a dangerous thing. This is why, perhaps, this exhibition expresses an old, but slightly neglected motif: the artist`s pride. For all their inner weakness, the uncertainty of their fates, their passions and the dangers of their lives, the imagination is a characteristic attribute for the "misfits." Pride is a consciousness of one’s own value and a challenge posed to the world.

Misfits is portraits of outstanding artists in dramatic film roles: Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Georges de la Peña, and Olgierd Łukaszewicz. The brilliant young Łukaszewicz in the role of dying Stanisław in Wajda`s The Birch Wood, based on the short story by Iwaszkiewicz (1970)Meryl Streep in the fascinating double role of Sara Woodruff and Anna from Reisz`s The French Lieutenant`s Woman based on Fowley`s novel and  Pinter`s screenplay (1981)Georgesa de la Peña as the dancer Nijinski (1980).

The unstated protagonist of Misfits is Karol Szymanowski. The absence of the great composer is evoked by images of the interior of the Atma Villa in Zakopane, which Stokłosa has rediscovered, filling it with a mood of nostalgia, concealment, and his distinctive sense of humor (a play of shadow and light!).

Lovers of painting will surely be drawn to the plant motifs that adorn several pictures. Anemones, kingcups, and cherry blossoms painted with sensitivity and a rare bold stroke bring to mind the masters of Art Nouveau.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a collector`s catalogue autographed by the artist, published in an edition of forty numbered copies. The catalogue contains reproductions of all the pictures gathered in the exhibition.
